塗師 渡辺喜三郎
渡辺喜三郎は、二代、三代と益田鈍翁などの近代数寄者に薫陶を受け、その美意識に適った優れた漆工芸品を数多く作製しました。
西の宗哲 東の喜三郎と言われ、現在、7代（註1）が制作に当たっています。
喜三郎を名乗る職人はかつて京の鷹峯にいましたが、江戸時代には江戸に移りました。
しかし、その系譜には不明なところがあり、初めから3代までは詳細が分かりません。
そこで、初めから6代に当たる三代目が三代を称したことから、4代を初代と数えています（註2）。
当代は元に戻したのだと考えられます。
二代目は、初代の長男で、明治2年（1869年）に生まれ、昭和18年（1943年）に没しましたが、益田鈍翁は二代目を殊遇しました。
初代の次男は、宗己と称しました。
三代目は、初代の三男の子で、明治43年（1910 年）5月1日に生まれ、昭和61年（1986年）1月6日に没しました。
喜三郎の作品の特徴としては、木地の薄さで、明かりにかざすと向こうが見えるほどです。
江戸風の塗りにより、懐石膳、椀類、棗など、茶道具の制作に一職人として携わりました。
派手ではありませんが、その素朴さは非常に落ち着いた感じを醸し出しています。
漆器の制作は分業体制が一般的で、喜三郎の場合、挽物師の田上助四郎、蒔絵師の守屋松亭が重要な役割を果たしました。
益田鈍翁、團琢磨、高橋箒庵、畠山即翁、堀越宗円らの知遇を得て、その求めに応じた作品を作りました。
鈍翁好み太夫棗、堀越宗円好み松棗、堀越宗円好み甲赤茶器などのお好みの漆器を残しています。
